6. SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS
6.1 PURPOSE OF PRACTICUM
Participating in the SEA-Teacher program is truly one of the best experiences. This activity can help improve your English language skills. This is because living in another country which has a different language requires us to speak English all the time to communicate with other people.
Through this activity, prospective teachers get the opportunity to improve their teaching skills, find out what learning systems are like in other countries, find out what other countries' methods and strategies are, the curriculum and lesson plans they create. Through this program we can also learn a lot about how to make good lesson plans, how to teach using methods and strategies that don't make students bored or sleepy, we become more creative, innovative and confident when teaching in class.
This program can also be a venue for cultural exchange. Living in another country with a different cultural and religious background can teach us about mutual tolerance between fellow humans. and we can get to know different cultures from other countries. and also we can introduce our culture to outsiders, because our culture is no less interesting than foreign culture.
6.2 PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM
I started my observations on the 3rd day of the first week, because on days 1 and 2 there was an event at school, namely the celebration of Tagalog Language Day. I followed my teacher in grade 11 STEM A and STEM C. I observed how my teacher taught. I made observations for 3 days. After that, in the second week I became a teacher's assistant who helped my supervising teacher's activities. I not only observe in class but also help students who have difficulty understanding the material. My total observation and teaching assistant hours were 10 hours. because I do it 5 times and 2 hours every day. in the third week, I started my teaching practice, I taught from Monday to Friday for 3-4 hours per day. I teach 4 classes, namely 11 STEM A, STEM B, STEM C and STEM D. So the total hours I get is 13 hours for teaching practice. In the fourth week, I did my final demo. This is the last time I teach and also the last time I come to FEU Roosevelt. The total hours I got from observation to final demo was 23 hours.
6.3 OUTCOMES OF PRACTICUM
From this practicum I got many results, namely;
- Can improve English language skills, teaching skills, and communicating with other people.
- Increase self-confidence and tolerance between fellow humans.
- Know the differences and similarities of each country, especially in the field of culture.
- Responsible for all activities at school.
- Be aware of the differences in school systems used in other countries.
- Can experience being an international teacher.
6.4 THE CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM
As long as I teach in class, the problem is about language. All students can speak English and there are differences in pronunciation in the Philippines. Moreover, I teach biology which uses a lot of special words. There are times when students in class cannot understand my instructions well. I had to think hard about how they could understand what I meant. Sometimes I use body movements to make them understand what I mean because I don't speak Tagalog either. And another method that I use is to display PowerPoint in the form of animated images or videos so that students understand the learning topic.
Apart from the language barrier, I have not encountered any obstacles during the practicum. Before leaving for the Philippines, I tried to memorize basic sentences and vocabulary in Tagalog which is similar to Indonesian so that it could help me communicate with local residents in that country. I am very fortunate that although not all students can speak English, most people in the Philippines understand English because in the Philippines, English is a second language. It makes it much easier for me to discuss with teachers and students in class. Apart from that, if students don't understand, I also sometimes use hand signals so that students can easily understand what I mean.
6.5 OVERALL IMPRESSON
First, I would like to thank you very much for holding this program because through this program I have received many benefits. I met new people from other countries, we told stories, exchanged culture and I also gained very useful experience for my future. I learn many things from the teachers and at the same time from my students at school. Through this program I can improve my communication skills in English, teaching skills, increase my self-confidence, responsibility and tolerance. I am very happy to be able to live and teach in another country that has a different language, religious and cultural background. People in the Philippines are very friendly, kind and friendly. and also Filipino people have faces similar to Indonesian people, so it was easy for me to adjust there, they were very welcoming when we first arrived in the Philippines. I am very grateful and grateful to all parties who organize this program. I will never forget this experience. thank you sea teacher program.
6.6 SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENT
The suggestion I can give to improve this program in the future is to extend the practicum period. If you have a longer practicum time, it would be very helpful for participants in this program to be able to learn and practice a lot, because in my opinion 1 month is too fast. I know that this is quite difficult to do because the participants also undergo teaching practice in their respective countries, but it will really help the participants. Thank you very much.
