5. TEACHING PRACTICE
5.1 PROCEDURES OF TEACHING
First of all, I greeted them first. I say good morning or good afternoon and ask how they are doing. I ask students to prepare for today's lesson. I give them motivational words related to the topic I will teach, so that students can be motivated to learn the material. his motivational words were "why do we need to learn about cells? what are the benefits of studying cells?"
In the learning process, I use a power point presentation with a projector. Before entering the material, I will repeat the previous material. Because repetition of material can help students to remember previous material and also the previous material is still related to the material that will be taught next. then I will show you a picture of cell diversity. So I will show different types of cells, such as animal cells, plants, fungi, protists and bacteria. First I will show the slides one by one and ask students questions about cell walls, nutrition, movement, cell types and numbers. on cell movement, I show a video so that students know how cells can move.
At the end of the learning process, I provide an evaluation of what they have learned that day. I ask them short questions about today's lesson and make a table on the board. I had them answer the blank part of the table on the board about cell differences. I also give them assignments to read about the topics we will discuss at the next meeting.
5.2 TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES
At FEUR High School I teach for 3-4 hours per day, because I teach in 4 classes, namely STEM A, STEM B, STEM C, and STEM D. The time allocation for each period is 60 minutes or 1 hour for 1 class. The time available is sufficient to complete the lessons and all the activities that I provide to students. I can ask further questions regarding the topics learned today and get students excited again to remember the lessons they have learned. Apart from the lesson plans that I have made, the learning process is divided into 5 parts, namely:
- Preliminary Activities (greeting, checking attendance, reviewing the last topic, and providing motivation)
- Lesson Proper (presentation of the topic, discussion of the lesson)
- Application
- Generalization
- Evaluation
5.3 PROBLEM SOLVING
As long as I teach in class, the problem is about language. All students can speak English and there are differences in pronunciation in the Philippines. Moreover, I teach biology which uses a lot of special words. There are times when students in class cannot understand my instructions well. I had to think hard about how they could understand what I meant. Sometimes I use body movements to make them understand what I mean because I don't speak Tagalog either. And another method that I use is to display PowerPoint in the form of animated images or videos so that students understand the learning topic. Luckily, there was a cooperating teacher who accompanied me every time I took class. The teacher watched me from the back of the class and helped me if I encountered difficulties while teaching. and my cooperating teacher also corrected my teaching method and gave me suggestions so that I could be better at the next meeting.
5.4 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
When I was going to teach for the first time I was very afraid and tense, I was afraid that later in class the students would not pay attention to what I was explaining. but that thinking is wrong, students at FEUR are very friendly, kind, and open to new people. So at this first meeting, it wasn't too difficult to manage the class. They didn't make a fuss, they were quiet and focused on paying attention to what I was explaining. However, there are some students who are less active in learning. but most of them are very active, enthusiastic and interactive. So that those who are not active can also participate in learning, I give motivational words so that they can be enthusiastic about understanding the material I will teach.
